Dark spots on the skin or hyper pigmentation is due to the increased production of melanin. This can be due to various reasons such as acne, sun damage, pregnancy, birth control pills, burns or abrasions among other things that damage skin.

There are many different ways to treat hyper pigmentation from over the counter creams, skin peels, to laser treatments, but this article will focus on easy home remedies.There are several cheap and effective home remedies to lighten the skin. Even though these remedies work for many they may not work on severe cases.


Mint leaves have soothing and curing properties which can help your skin. Just crushed fresh mint leaves into a paste. You can add a little milk to smooth the paste if you wish. Apply the past to the dark areas of your skin for 20 minutes, than wash and dab dry the area.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a great herb with antiseptic properties. It is known for its usefulness in treating numerous health and skin disorders. It is best to use fresh raw Aloe Vera. Just break or cut a leaf and apply the gel directly to the dark area of skin.


Avocados are a great source of vitamin E which is very beneficial to healthy skin. All you have to do is peel the avocado and smash it into a paste and apply it to the skin for 30 minutes. After the treatment wash the paste off and dab dry the area. This will help lighten the skin.


Potato has natural bleaching properties, which is why it is excellent for lightening patches and blemishes as well as darkened skin. Cut a potato into thin slices and place them on the affected area for 30 minutes.

Lemon juice is very acidic, and contains high levels of vitamin C, which can fight off free radicals and increase the speed of cell turnover. This can help the skin grown new skin cells to replace the hyper pigmented skin cells. You can use lemon juice on the skin in its full strength up to three times per day. Allow the skin to air dry.

Rosbach, the author, and add that  it is important that you stick with whichever treatment you decide to use for at least 2 or 3 weeks before giving up on it. Hyperpigmentation does not go away immediately and it can take several months to lighten the skin to your desired appearance. 

In most cases it will take about 2 weeks before you start seeing results. Once you see that something is working make sure to stick with it. Also remember to keep the treated area protected from the sun. Sun damage and quickly destroy any process you make so always use sunscreen especially on areas you are actively treating.
