Cholesterol structure and function is not always referring to bad things, such as cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. The disease that is related to cholesterol is usually caused by the bad cholesterol, a type of cholesterol that is produced by unnecessary elements such as foods containing animal products or fats. In fact, cholesterol also has necessary function and structure to the body. The structural component of cholesterol is essential in order to sustain appropriate fluidity and membrane permeability. In other word, cholesterol is one of many important substances in the body and used by the body to keep us support our health.

The term cholesterol, as a member of sterols, is assumed from the Greek wod chole, which means bile, and stereos, which means solid. The chemical suffix-ol is added to assert alcohol. Cholesterol is an organic chemical component which is produced naturally in the body. It is divided into two types, the good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol. Seventy five percent of the good cholesterol is produced by the liver and other cells in the body; it is called nature cholesterol, while twenty percent of the balance happens from the outside of the body; it comes from food that you consume, such as dietary sources, including cheese, pork, beef, egg yolks, poultry, shrimp, fish, and even human breast milk.

Cholesterol Structure and Function: The Structural Role of Cholesterol

The structure of the chemical compound of cholesterol itself is a soft, waxy, and fat like substance which is circulating in the blood stream. The chemical compounds of cholesterol links themselves into two types of carrier proteins, which are high density lipoprotein (or known as HDL), and low density lipoproteins (or known as LDL). Cholesterol can be found in all of the mammalian's cell membranes throughout the animal kingdom. Biologically, cholesterol is an important part of the lipid alcohols' group. If the level of cholesterol rising, the blood stream will accumulate on the walls of the arteries and form "plaques".

When the plaques are formed and it hindrances the blood vessels, the risk of someone to get heart attacks and strokes then risen as well. That is why, many health experts debating about the levels of cholesterol that we should keep and how to cut down the bad cholesterol with a diet.

Cholesterol Structure and Function: The Importance of Cholesterol Inside the Body

Cholesterol has some important roles as well. One of the main functions of cholesterol which is attached to HDL protein is carrying the harmful LDL molecules to the liver, where it will be recycled and removed from the body. Another function of cholesterol is to form and maintain membrane fluidity on the scope of physiological temperatures. The body's stability and permeability, and also the membrane's protein mobility, are built by the ratio of cholesterol and polar lipids. It is the premier function as a protective barrier. The cholesterol structure and function is also accumulated in the body's hormone, such as the testes, adrenals, ovaries, fatty acid ester, and many others, including androgens and estrogens in male and female sex hormones.
